German star to force move to Liverpool

The Metro has suggested that Borussia Dortmund’s star winger Marco Reus could be leaving the club, with his agent hinting at the possibility of a move abroad.

One club which has come to the forefront of rumours regarding Reus’ future are Liverpool, who are looking to fill the gap left by Luis Suárez after selling the Uruguayan earlier in this summer’s window, and this news from Germany could spark a bid from The Reds.

Earlier this week, Reus rejected a contract extension which he was offered due to a £27 million release clause on his current deal that will be activated after this season. Dortmund are hoping to keep hold of the talented 25 year-old, or at least be able to request a higher fee for selling him, after getting burned in a similar situation with Mario Götze’s move to Bayern Munich last year.

Reus’ contract rejection, and those subsequent comments from agent Dirk Hebel, mean that Dortmund are more likely to cash-in on the forward now, and Liverpool have money to spend from the £75 million sale of Suárez to Barcelona.

However, the likelihood of Reus going to Liverpool is slim. Having acquired Adam Lallana and Lazar Marković within the past month, and with starlet Raheem Sterling already a regular, Reus joining would be a bad move for the player, even if his transfer would be a sign of intent for the club’s upcoming campaign.

With Reus’ pedigree, there must certainly be a plethora of clubs keeping an eye on his situation, including Bayern, who are always intent on improving their squad. Bayern are a smart club when it comes to transfer dealing, as Götze’s move showed, and would not be scared to bide their time and wait until Reus is available for a lower price next summer.

In addition, Reus would surely only want to move to a side which he would see as a step-up and, as good as Liverpool were last season, Dortmund have seen more success in recent years. The other European teams which have outperformed Dortmund over the last few seasons have mainly been Bayern, Barça and Real Madrid, and the latter two have brought-in at least two big-name signings already this summer, covering Reus’ position in doing so.

The defining factor which will probably dictate where the winger ends-up is how he recovers from the injury which kept him out of the World Cup in Brazil. Expected to now miss the opening of the season, when he returns, he may not be at a level at which he previously performed, and that would put clubs off paying more than £27 million for him before the transfer window closes.

While it’s not uncommon for players to transfer whilst suffering from injuries, it is a risky move, and if Bayern are the only viable option to sign Reus, it’s not going to happen.

It feels almost inevitable that Reus will join Bayern from Dortmund, at least in comparison to the chance that Liverpool have to bring him in, but it won’t be this year.

Wait until next summer, see if that injury affects this coming season’s performances, and pay a considerable amount less than signing him crocked now.
