Gerrard PFA Fans’ Player of Month
The winners of the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month Awards for January have been announced, with Steven Gerrard again announced as the Premier League winner.
Steven Gerrard has once again confirmed the belief of many – that he is one of the top midfielders in Europe; arguably the world.
A former PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, the Liverpool skipper has been hailed the best player in the Premier League for the second month running.
That alone is testimony to the remarkable consistency of the England midfield dynamo whose performances have again been recognised by football fans.
And, if Rafael Benitez’s recent comments about Gerrard and his uncanny partnership with Fernando Torres are anything to go by, don’t rule out the possibility of his captain fantastic being in the hunt for the February award too.
After the 2-0 win against Chelsea at the weekend, a result that re-ignited Liverpool’s title hopes, Benitez suggested that the Gerrard-Torres combo is beginning to reach the heights of last season when they terrorised Premier League defences.
Torres and Gerrard plundered a staggering 53 goals between them last season, and the Liverpool boss is expecting more of the same. “We know the understanding between both was crucial last season, it will be again this season now they are back together again,” said the Anfield boss.
“In some games they can kill defenders with their skills. The goal they created was excellent against Everton in the cup. The piece of skill from Torres to create the goal shows that he is getting very close to his best again. He showed that the understanding between him and Gerrard will be crucial for us for the rest of the season.”
