Lionel Messi Unaware He Scored Barcelona’s Historic 5000th Goal
El Mesias once again showed that he cares little for personal records after admitting he was oblivious to the fact that he now holds the honour of scoring Barca’s milestone 5000th goal.
On a weekend where Real Madrid’s Raul notched up his 307th club goal to equal the record set by the legendary Alfredo di Stefano, arch rivals, Barcelona would not be overshadowed as they netted their 5000th league goal in the 2-1 win at Racing Santander.
The Blaugrana’s own superstar, Lionel Messi had the privilege to inscribe his name into the club’s history books by scoring the landmark goal, but the Argentine had no idea at the time what he had achieved.
“I did not realise that I had scored Barca’s 5000th league goal. I was only informed of it after the match,” he said during the post-match interviews.
“When you’re on the field, you do not think about such things. You only think about winning. But still, I’m very happy to be part of the club’s history.
“The important thing is that we won another three points. It was a very difficult ground to play in and the pressure was on us after Madrid won on Saturday [against Numancia].
“The game was very complicated when they lead 1-0 and I had a little bit of luck scoring the winning goal,” he stressed.
Messi was presented with the match ball, signed by all his teammates, following the game. But he has no intentions of keeping it.
“The 5000th goal is for all the fans and as for the ball, it will be going to Barca’s museum. It’s not something for me to keep. Being able to score the milestone goal is enough for me,” he concluded.
The come-from-behind win ensured that Barcelona maintain their 12-point lead at the top of the table over Los Blancos.
