Portsmouth to Sack Adams
Reports suggest that Portsmouth have parted company with manager Tony Adams. The former England captain, who only took over at Fratton Park in October, has presided over a disastrous run of nine league games without a win.
Adams' departure is expected to be confirmed on Monday. Saturday's late, late defeat to Liverpool was marked by some horrendous defending, a worry considering that the former Arsenal skipper's previous job was that of defensive coach to former boss Harry Redknapp, who he succeeded as manager when Spurs tempted his fellow Londoner to White Hart Lane . Last month saw the FA Cup holders exit the same tournament at the Third Round stage at the hands of Championship side Swansea City.
The January transfer window saw Pompey loses the services of prize assets Jermain Defoe and Lassana Diarra and Adams leaves the club a single point above the relegation zone. A series of interviews with a harried-looking Adams had pointed to him finding his new position difficult, in a fashion similar to his abortive first step into management with Wycombe Wanderers, which ended with his resignation after barely a year in charge.
Adams, joins a select band of former England captains who have found the step into management difficult, with Paul Ince's removal from his Blackburn job was the last example of a curse which has affected Bryan Robson, Bobby Moore and Ray Wilkins in the past.
Two names linked with the vacant post are former Chelsea boss Avram Grant, who served as director of football at Portsmouth during the 2006-7 season, and former West Ham and Charlton boss Alan Curbishley, who Pompey bosses last week strongly denied any link with. Curbishley himself has denied contact has taken place and has expressed his sympathy for the seemingly departed Adams.
