Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez says he has no regrets about his public attack on Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson in January, as the two teams prepare to meet for a Premier League showdown this afternoon.
The Reds go to Old Trafford knowing anything short of victory will surely end any faint hopes they still hung on to of winning the title.
Just 64 days ago, Benitez launched a verbal attack on Ferguson and the treatment of him from the Football Association. Since then Liverpool have lost their grasp of the top of the Premier League and now sit seven points behind the reigning Champions.
But Benitez is adamant that his comments had no effect on United’s surge of form and has no regrets over making them.
Preparing to offer a warm handshake to his United counterpart at Old Trafford today, Benitez told press, “I do not regret saying anything and it did not have any effect on results. It had no influence on them winning their games in hand. It was the right time to say what I said. I do not believe my remarks — facts, not comments — have had any effect on the title race.
“I was reading some articles from different journalists about the size of the United squad and that for me is the main difference. There is a massive difference in terms of the two clubs and their squads.”
