Liverpool confirm Alonso and Mascherano "Not for Sale"
Liverpool have reinforced their manager Rafael Benítez's insistence that the midfielders Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano are not for sale. Both players have been the subject of transfer speculation, with Alonso linked with a move to Real Madrid and Mascherano reportedly a target of Barcelona.
Last week Benítez said Barcelona "could not afford" Mascherano and that Alonso was "not for sale" and a statement from the club today reiterated those sentiments: "Despite repeated media speculation on the futures of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, Liverpool has received no official approach or offer from any club regarding the players. Neither is for sale and furthermore Liverpool has no interest in the long list of Spanish-based players being linked with a move to Anfield as part of any deal."
