Valencia winger Juan Mata has revealed Rafa Benitez's interest in signing him while the player's father has hinted at problems within the Spanish club that could push Mata towards a £16.5million move to Liverpool.
Mata is in sensational form in Spain's La Liga but Valencia's financial problems mean the club could be forced to accept an offer for the 21-year-old midfielder.
Although the player in under contract until 2012, he is only earning around £10,000-a-week. Valencia have offered improved terms but the deal was not to the liking of Mata or his father, Juan Snr.
The player's father, also his agent, said: 'We want Valencia to recognise the kid's true quality, and it's not only a matter of money.'
Juan Jnr added: 'This matter is all down to the club and my agent. Benitez is a big coach but I just want to concentrate on my game without any distractions.'
Benitez's interest in Mata could spell the end of unfancied forward Ryan Babel's Anfield career.
