Liverpool eye highly rated spanish defender

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is preparing a January move for Spanish defender Ivan Gonzalez.

The Malaga centre half has only recently broken into the first team at the La Liga side, making only five senior appearances for the club this season.

That doesn't appear to be an issue for the Liverpool boss, and the Spaniard has a track record of returning to his homeland in the transfer windows to strengthen his side.

The Reds are in the middle of an almighty scrap to make fourth place and thus qualify for the Champions League, and the addition of a young centre back could make the difference in the Premier League.

A 21-year-old with a bright future, Gonzalez is tipped to be a future full international for the Spanish side, and The Sun reports that Liverpool are ready to make a move in the New Year.

With transfer funds limited at Anfield, the probable sale of Andrea Dossena would create funds for a move from the Merseyside club.

Competition could come from Hull City, but Benitez has the Spanish connection and the Reds must be favourites to land the player if a bidding war begins.
