Liverpool striker Fernando Torres scored an injury-time 50th Premier League goal, to make him the fastest player in the club's history to reach that mark and give his side a Champions League lifeline with a 1-0 win against Aston Villa.
Reds' goalkeeper Pepe Reina had been the hero after stopping Stewart Downing with a brilliant reflex stop and then Gabriel Agbonlahor saw his effort blocked by Reina's legs. Both sides then had more good chances to break the deadlock, but Torres then latched onto a ball following a mistake from Stephen Warnock and drilled a low shot across Brad Friedel in the 93rd minute.
It means Rafael Benitez's side are only two points behind Villa and three adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham in the race for European places.
