Johnson in contention for comeback against Wigan

Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson looks set to make his long-awaited return to competitive action against Wigan Athletic on Monday.

The England international has been sidelined for over two months with a knee injury he sustained at the end of 2009, but his manager is confident the 25-year-old is now ready to play.

“He trained on Friday. It was a full training session and I think he will be okay to go in the squad for Wigan,” Reds boss Rafael Benitez told reporters.

The news will also be welcomed by Johnson's international manager, Fabio Capello, who will be hoping the former Portsmouth and Chelsea player can get back to top form and fitness with his club ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.

With Johnson returning, and the likes of striker Fernando Torres and midfielder Yossi Benayoun back in regular first team action for Liverpool, Benitez is confident his squad have what it takes to secure a Champions League place.

He added: “The players we have coming back now can have an influence on the run-in."
