Defender interested in move to Anfield

Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno is still Liverpool’s first-choice left-back despite recent links to Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand, and they may try to use Iago Aspas as part of the deal to bring the Spaniard to Anfield, according to the Liverpool ECHO. Furthermore, The Echo’s James Pearce believes the player wants to join Liverpool.

Liverpool’s deal for Moreno looked to have stalled after the Europa League winners demanded upwards of £20 million for the Spanish left-back, so reports started to reignite Liverpool’s interest in Chelsea full-back, Bertrand. The Reds were linked with a £6 million move for the Englishman, who started in the Champions League final success against Bayern Munich in 2012.

He spent half of last season on loan with Aston Villa and didn’t inspire many but Brendan Rodgers and his transfer committee still seem happy to target him and see something that others haven’t.

However, Liverpool flop Aspas may well be used in exchange for the Moreno transfer as Sevilla are apparently looking at the forward for around £5m. Aspas did not score in the Premier League last season and was a terrible purchase from the Reds. He failed to settle after his move from Celta Vigo and now looks set to return to La Liga.

James Pearce of the Liverpool ECHO said: “Sevilla are certainly interested in Aspas and the Spaniard certainly doesn’t have a future at Liverpool.

“The only reason he’s been back at pre-season at Melwood this week is because the club haven’t had any takers for him up until now.

“I know Sevilla have said the Moreno deal was dead but people I’ve spoken to at LFC haven’t given up on it. The player wants to come to Anfield.”

He added: “I wrote that in May that Bertrand was on the club’s shortlist of left-back targets they had drawn up. He was viewed as a back up option to Moreno.”
