Liverpool close to signing Benfica attacker

Liverpool are closing in on their fourth signing of the summer transfer window as they have supposedly agree a fee of £19.8 million with Benfica for Chelsea targeted young playmaker Lazar Markovic, according to the Telegraph.

Markovic, 20, has been a star for Benfica over the last year or so and has been linked with a move to Anfield for a number of months after impressing in the Europa League.

The Portuguese side won the league and reached the Europa League final which they lost on penalties to Sevilla, continuing the curse put on the club years ago that stated they would never win a trophy in Europe again. Since the ‘curse’ was set, Benfica have not won another trophy in European competition.

Markovic, despite his young age, is one of the stars of an attractive, attacking side and Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers have been alerted to his talents.

He’s a fast, tricky and skillful player who can unlock defences with ease and could be a constant threat in Liverpool’s already fiery attack.

Liverpool are moving quickly to spend the money they will recoup from Luis Suarez’s imminent sale to Barcelona and Markovic is one of their main summer targets.

Should he sign, Markovic will join Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Emre Can who have all already signed for the Reds who have been busy this summer.
