Agger Nears Liverpool Exit

The Reds' look set to lose their Danish defender after talks over a new deal reached a stand-still...

British tabloid The Daily Mail claims that Daniel Agger is on his way out of Liverpool after his agent, Per Steffensen, lunched with AC Milan officials in Italy yesterday.

The Rossoneri have been keen on the 24-year-old for quite some time, and they reportedly had an €8.5 million bid rejected by the Reds at the beginning of the month.

The San Siro giants hope to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the Dane's future at Anfield, and the odds are swinging in their favour after the latest round of contract negotiations.

Rafael Benitez wants Agger to pen a new deal as soon as possible, as he considers the classy centre-back a key member of the Merseysiders' rearguard.

However, the Liverpool manager is on the verge of conceding defeat as the former Brondby player continues to demand improved wages of around £60,000 - roughly double his current pay-packet.

With Martin Skrtel fit again after two months on the sidelines and Sami Hyypia likely to be handed a contract extension, Benitez may offload Agger and use the money on Anderson, the Fluminense defender who was recently linked with the Premier League heavyweights.

There is no official word from either Liverpool or Milan, however; so Kopites shouldn't despair yet, just as the Diavolo faithful shouldn't yet rejoice.
