Liverpool & Spurs target - dubbed the new Gerrard

Lazio have made a £1.5m bid for Hamilton's teenage sensation James McCarthy - dubbed the "new Steven Gerrard".

Hamilton rejected it with chairman Ronnie McDonald saying: "I made a promise to [manager] Billy Reid at the start of the season, I told him I would not be selling anyone in January and I will not break that promise no matter who is offering what."

Around 18 months ago, Liverpool reportedly offered £1m for McCarthy.

Celtic, Rangers, Reading, Sheffield United and Tottenham Hotspur were also interested in McCarthy.

At the time, his agent Bill McMurdo said: "Liverpool wanted to take him to Italy for a tournament.

"They agreed to meet Hamilton's asking price, which would have earned them around £1m if James made the grade.

"Sheffield United were also desperate to sign him and said they would put him straight into their reserve side.

"They said he would be in the first team within a year.

"Reading and Spurs were also after James, while here [in Scotland], Rangers and Celtic are interested."
