Torres asks Real to forget Gerrard

Fernando Torres has warned Real Madrid that they have no chance of luring Steven Gerrard away from Liverpool.

Former Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who was at the club from 2000 to 2006, appears set to run for the position again following the departure of Ramon Calderon – and reports suggest he will vow to sign both Gerrard and Xabi Alonso this summer.

However, Torres has warned Perez that it would be a complete waste of time to try to sign Gerrard as he would never leave Anfield.

"There isn't a team in the world that Steven wouldn't get into, so – yes – I am sure he has his admirers,” he said in The Sunday Mirror.

"But there are some players who love their club so much that they won't leave no matter what money is thrown around.

"We saw Kaka stay at AC Milan and that was nice to see in these times.

"Like Stevie, Kaka is one of the best players and, in the same way he loves Milan, Stevie loves Liverpool.

"It's not about how we would get him to stay – he would never leave.

"The fans love him, the manager loves him and he is our captain. Trust me when I say he is going nowhere."

Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane said last week that he believed Gerrard could be the best player in the world, and Torres feels he may be right.

"He is the best player I have ever played with, and I have played with some great players with Spain and Liverpool,” he said.

"He could easily be the best player in the world."

He added: "Great players can win the games on their own when the rest of the team are not playing well. Stevie can do that.

“It shows how special he is."
