Liverpool to offer new improved contract to Masch

Following a summer where he was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, Liverpool have reportedly offered a new deal to Javier Mascherano that will see the Argentine defensive midfielder double his wages at Anfield.

Widespread reports this morning suggest that Rafa Benitez made the initial offer to Mascherano following his return from Argentina’s friendly win over Russia last week.

Mascherano, who signed a four-year deal in February 2008, has been offered a two-year extension which will double his weekly pay packet from £50,000 to £100,000.

If he signs on the dotted line, Mascherano will be among the highest paid players at Liverpool alongside Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

Benitez said late last week: "I have already had talks with him. Barcelona are a top side so it’s not easy for any player if they are interested in you. But he knew from the first day that we didn’t want to sell him. He’s an important player for us. He knows that we have to work together for a long time."
