Wenger believes Liverpool to be a threat for the title

Despite suffering their second league defeat in three games, manager Arsène Wenger says that rivals Liverpool cannot be discounted from the Premiership title race.

Defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa have seen Liverpool notch up as many losses in the league as the whole of last season, and the campaign is only three games old.

And some are even wondering if current champions Manchester United are still the same force as last season, after they themselves fell to a shock defeat against Burnley. Perhaps the champions are not the same without star player Cristiano Ronaldo, who left to join Real Madrid in the summer for a world record £80 million.

Wenger said: "Liverpool had two tricky opponents. Tottenham are on a high at the moment, and when you play Aston Villa at home [at Anfield], you know they can be dangerous on the counter-attack.

"But I do not discount Liverpool. I believe they will still be a threat for the title.

"You can expect [shock defeats] at the start of the season sometimes. Some teams have no history handicap and go into the season fresh like Burnley. At the moment they are in the position Hull were in last year.

"They come up with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of strengths as well - they are good teams. Some top teams are not completely ready to play every game at their best."
