Gerrard hungry for more medals

Steven Gerrard is closing in on his 500th appearance for Liverpool – but the skipper’s mind is only on medals and not milestones.

Gerrard made his 494th appearance for the Anfield outfit in the 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday.

If the 29-year-old remains an ever-present in the next six games for Rafael Benitez’s side, he will reach the landmark figure in the Champions League clash at Lyon on November 4.

Of the 12 players to have played more times for Liverpool, only team-mate Jamie Carragher has not won the league championship. And Gerrard is more concerned on filling that hole in his honours list than any appearance records.

"Obviously it’s something that I’m really proud of, to be getting close to 500 games for Liverpool," said the England international.

"Growing up it was always my dream to play for Liverpool and I’d have been happy as a kid kicking a ball about if I only got to play one game for the club, so to have got to 500 games will mean a lot to me and my family and friends.

"When the people above you on the list of appearances are people like Kenny Dalglish then it’s special to be in that kind of company.

"Kenny is a legend, one of the greatest footballers of all time so to have played for this club as many times as he has is extra special.

"But Kenny won league titles, European Cups and every other kind of honour in his Liverpool career and that’s what I want too for myself and for this team. I don’t just want to play games, I want to be a part of a Liverpool side that is in there winning prizes year in and year out."
