Liverpool start their summer spending with a brilliant signing

Liverpool are on the verge of tying Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh to a pre-contract arrangement valued at around £25 million.

A number of big clubs - including Arsenal, Inter and Juventus - are said to be interested in the highly rated Moroccan, whose term at the Stade Chaban Delmas expires in the summer.

The Gunners had hoped to lure the player to London this month, but Chamakh has made it clear that he would prefer to serve out the remainder of his contract with les Girondins.

However, the 26-year-old has also said that he will make a decision on his future by the close of the current transfer window, and it appears that Anfield will be his destination.

It is claimed that Chamakh and the Reds undertook a string of in-depth discussions over the weekend, and that the French-born star has agreed to a lucrative deal.

And while Bordeaux will receive nothing for the loss of their key forward, the player himself will reportedly snare a £12m signing-on fee and wages of around £60,000 per week - which adds up to £25m.

It seems an extravagant outlay for a club struggling to make any headway in the January sales, but Liverpool owner Tom Hicks has promised big-money signings in the summer.
