Liverpool in pole position to sign Lovren

LIVERPOOL are favourites to beat Tottenham to the signature of Southampton star Dejan Lovren this summer.

New Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wants the £15m-rated defender to follow him to White Hart Lane, having only joined Saints from Lyon last summer in a deal believed to be worth around £8.5m.

The 24-year-old impressed at the back alongside Jose Fonte, as Southampton surprised many by cruising to a top-ten finish.

Spurs were linked with a move for the centre-back this week after Lovren handed in a transfer request earlier this summer in order to force through his departure from St Mary's.

But Liverpool are being backed to beat Spurs to the defender, with leading bookmakers offering 8/11 that he will join the Reds over their Premier League rivals, who rank in at 6/4.

Strengthening the defence is a priority for Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool and the £15m-rated Lovren has long been a target for the former Swansea boss.

Other summer targets for the Anfield outfit include Lovren's team mate Adam Lallana, who hopes to press on with a deal once the World Cup is over.
